Whisk applesauce, ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic and brown sugar in a bowl.

Set aside.

Rub the brisket with salt and pepper.

Heat oil in skillet and braise on both sides, about 4 minutes on both sides.

Add the onion to the ketchup mixture and stir to combine.

Put brisket in baking dish.

Cover with the ketchup mixture.

Put lid on dish and bake at 325° for 2 hours.

Remove from oven and turn over in pan; baste with the juices.

Return to oven covered for another 2 hours.

Repeat basting.

Bake until meat pulls apart easily.
